Better known as PATERSON'S ROADS. Daniel Paterson was the Assistant to George Morrison (to which the book is dedicated), the Quarter-Master-General of his Majesty's Forces. This Tenth Edition represented nearly Ninety Pages additional text from the previous, "including considerable Improvements in the direct Roads, many new Cross Roads, and a great Number of Noblemen's and Gentlemen's Seats.". Later binding of full crushed levant morocco (goatskin), dark blue. Four raised bands, decorated gilt, compartments decorated blind. Boards double-ruled and decorated in blind. Archival restoration to last leaf, at corner. Very occasional, light foxing to text. Tight, bright pages; "E. Houlditch, Marsh Gibbons, Bucks." inked on second fep. One two-page map, entitled: "A General View of the Roads of England and Wales". Later editions include maps throughout. Part of an important chapter in the history of coaching, this slim little volume was one all coachmen carried to find their way. In the preface, the publishers advertise both The Traveling Dictionary, which they call the companion volume to this Description of The Roads, writing: "the two bound together make a complete Travelling Companion", and The Roads of Scotland which may be "bound up with the above". They write: "...When the Travelling Dictionary is bound up with this, Then the Distances between any two Places (London not being one of them) follow the Index to the Gentlemen's Seats; and, at the End of them, are the Distances of the several Towns and Bridges upon the River Thames, from London Bridge, and from each other, by Water." Eighteenth-Century editions are quite scarce.
