Translated from the French of Marmontel, but translator not cited. Translated from "Les Incas" which was published in 1777. Jean Francois Marmontel was a member of the "Encyclopedist movement", and member of the Academie Francais. A prolific writer, he is best know for his four volume "Memoires d'un Pere" written in 1804. "Les Incas" contains some fictional accounts, and traces the cruelties of the Spanish conquerors. "Every nation has had its cut-throats, and its fanatics...the Spanish have not been wanting in this generous pride, so well suited to the character of that nation." [from the preface].
