The author presents short travel acconts beginning with her travels in 1864 from her home in New York down to Cuba and then on to New Orleans and Florida. Later chapters recount her travels in California and the Rocky Mountains. The last part of the book consist of her poems.
Note: In the New Orleans she "learned of the terrible effects and results of slavery"...and tells of a slave buyer who went north and bought "a white girl twelve years old...he took her South, cut her hair, colored her skin and sold her." [Page 18].
