" First English edition of an account by the French missionary, and professor of philosophy and mathematics Philippe Avril, relating his travels in search of an overland route to China and the Far East. "Avril was instructed by the King of France to attempt to pioneer an overland route to China. After traveling six years through Kurdistan, Armenia, Astrakhan and Persia, Avril arrived at Moscow but was turned away and refused permission to travel through Tartary by the Russian Government and returned to Poland". After writing this narrative of his journey, he set out again for the East in 1698 by the sea route; his ship never arrived and it was presumed had died enroute". He was 44 years of age. (Howgego A142), Wing A4275, ESTC R16481. Translated from the original French., with anti-Catholic and anti-Jewish sentiments out there for all to read. Good only. Item #76862
