Title-page and 1 page resolution that authorized the Library of Congress to purchase the remaining library of President Thomas Jefferson. Most of the original collection had been destroyed in the War of 1812. The library bought the collection of 6,487 books for $23,950. Jefferson had spent nearly 50 years accumulating a wide variety of books in several languages and in many subjects, including philosophy, science, literature, architecture, law, religion, and mathematics. A fire struck the Library in its Capitol chambers in 1851, destroying 2/3 of the already diminished collection of Jefferson's books.
