Thomas Barnard, Jr. (1748-1814) assumed the position of head minister of the First Church in Salem in 1770 following his father, Reverend Thomas Barnard's, sudden paralysis. The church split into two over disputes about leadership. Barnard Jr. and his followers formed the North Church in Salem. (Congregational Library and Archives) The present sermon offers a window into the sentiments, fears, and swelling patriotism felt by congregants belonging to the New Republic.r.
