London, England: Longmans, Green, Longman, Roberts, & Green, 1864. First Edition. Hardcover. Quarto, 10 3/4" x 8 1/2." pp. viii, 462. Full red Morocco leather, panelled, triple ruled in alternating gilt and blind, gilt sceptre and crown motiff to four corners of panel and 5 compartments on spine. 5 raised bands, moderately rubbed, with gilt lettering and fillets. Corners slightly bumped. Light rubbing to edges and hinges of boards, but binding very sound. Some wear to top of spine. All edges gilt. Gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers, bookplate "Mrs. James Dick" to front pastedown. Free end papers foxed. Internal pages clean, excepting the occassional faint fingerprint in the margins. 81 vibrantly colored illustrations desgined by James E. Doyle and engraved by Edmund Evans. Overall, excellent copy. "Evan's colour printing at its very best is seen again in A Chronicle of England....the numerous small illustrations are set in the text and printed in up to ten colours, as bright as if they had just been painted...no one throughout the nineteenth century could mix such bright and clear inks as Evans" (McLean 135).
