Joseph Galloway (1731-1803) was a distinguished American colonial legislator, attorney, and loyalist. Originally an ally of Franklin, he served as moderate delegate to the First Continental Congress from Pennsylvania. When it became clear there was no middle ground between colonists' demands for liberty and British insistence on maintaining total sovereignty, he joined the royalist cause. As part of Howes' army, he participated in the British capture of Philadelphia and became Superintendent of Police of the city. After American forces won the city back in 1778, he fled to England. In exile, he was convicted of high treason and all his property was confiscated. (Wikipedia)
