Frances Anne Kemble (1809-1893) belonged to a well known and prolific family of English actors. She gained renown on the English stage before performing in New York and Philadelphia. In the latter city, Kemble met her future husband Pierce Butler, heir to vast plantations in North Carolina and Georgia. Frances kept a journal while visiting her husband's landholdings, where she recorded her horror and indignation at the brutality of slavery. She published her Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1863, which established her writing career. Throughout her life she wrote plays, poems, and autobiographies. (ODNB).
