HISTORY OF THE EXPEDITION TO RUSSIA UNDERTAKEN BY THE EMPEROR NAPOLEON, IN THE YEAR 1812 (2 VOLUMES, COMPLETE)

London, England: Treuttel and Würtz, 1825. Third Edition. Leather-bound. 2vol. Full leather (5 1/2" x 3 1/2"). Boards triple-ruled in blind, with tiny gilt solar design (or remnant thereof) at each of the 16 corners. Third edition, "Carefully Revised and Corrected". Fold-out map of "Countries between Paris and Moscow", plus four, full-page engravings as called for, and two smaller engravings, one to each title page of the set. Some recent touch-up by a conservator, largely to spine. Original gilt-upon-black title labels ("Expedition to Russia") preserved, though Volume I's label is missing material along two edges. Sympathetic replacement morocco labels, indicating volume numbers. Gilt dentelle to open edges of boards, albeit faded. Frontis portrait of Emperor Napoleon (Vol. I) detached. Light foxing to title pages, rest of text unobscured, with just a modicum of age-tanning. Overall, a clean, presentable set of this powerful and classic eyewitness account. Very Good. Item #83357

It might be impossible to find a more disastrous & catastrophic military campaign, particularly under the direction of a military genius; the events described unfold with the air of an inevitable Greek tragedy
