The convention was held over four days at the Chicago Coliseum, primarily for the purpose of nominating a potential successor to President Theodore Roosevelt, and Vice President Charles Fairbanks. The propsed platform for the convention included: 1) A buildup of the armed forces 2) Protection of American citizens abroad 3) Extension of foreign commerce 4) The Hague treaties 5) Support of war veterans 6) Self-government for Cuba and the Philippines 7) Citizenship for the residents of Puerto Rico 8) Extension of rural mail delivery 9) Upholding the rights of African Americans and the civil service 10) Greater efficiency in national public health agencies 11) Court Reform 12) A revival of the U.S. Merchant Marine.
