Chicago, IL: Wilcox and Follett Co., 1942. First Edition. Paperback original, edgeworn, with a few chips to spine, now protected in stiff plastic cover. Pages browned. 298 pp. In the preface, Burlinghame writes: "The main portion of the book is devoted to clear, compact and illustrated descriptions of the best tricks performed by the two Herrmanns, whom I unite under the appellation of Herrmann the Magician...several of the tricks herein described are easily executed in a private parlor, without cumbersome apparatus, thus affording a pleasant pastime for the home circle. The book contains, also, a number of most curious revelations concerning famous stage tricks that have been puzzling the whole world."

Ken Kesey's name -- most likely a youthful signature -- is modestly penned on the top left of the copyright page of this paperback original. In a book entitled "Conversations with Ken Kesey" by Scott F. Parker (University of Mississippi Press, 2014), Kesey speaks:

"When I read Camus, The Stranger, and when I read Mount Analogue, these were like tiny windows that flash by on two passing trains. Standing there, looking out of this one window just for an instant, I see into this other area, and there I am a young boy, sending off for some decals which I pasted onmy skin and on glass -- decals of Batman comic book heroes. And when my package of decals arrives there is as a bonus, this smallbook of magic.I got interested in magic then sent away for a catalogue of stage illusions. I got into a lot of theatrical magic and did shows all through high school and in coillege. I went fromthis into ventriloquism into hypnotism. And from hypnotism into dope. But it's alway been the same trip, the same kind of search...Most of the people I know are the kids in high school who ordered magic tricks..." Item #84906

Probably a popularized distillation of his 1897 biography HermannThe Magician about Alexander Herrmann.
In this book, the author writes: ""...I now present to the reader, biographies of the two great conjurers known to the world under the names of Carl and Alexander Herrmnann, both equally famous in their specialties..."
