Francisco Bellini lived from 1643 and 1704, was an Italian physician and anatomist who did pioneering work in nephrology, as early as the age of 19 when a paper he published while a student at the University of Pisa ("Anatomical Exercise on the Structure and Function of the Kidney"), presented for the first time Bellini's findings that "the kidney consists of an immense number of tiny canals". (Britannica). He also was an early proponent of the value of urinalysis as a tool to arrive at a sound diagnosis. Bellini later became official court physician to Duke Cosimo III and Pope Clement XI.
