"Our sole knowledge of Arthur Stringer is from his book, The Experienc'd Huntsman, which was brought out in 1714 by James Blow, an early Belfast publisher. Another edition was produced in Dublin in 1780 with little alteration. It is evident that Stringer was huntsman and keeper to Viscount Conway on his estates of some 3,000 acres at Portmore, on the shores of Lough Neagh, in Co. Antrim.
"Few copies of the Huntsman seem to have survived and Stringer has been almost entirely forgotten. He was apparently completely unknown to Irish naturalists in the past century and a half and, while I was compiling a bibliography of the Irish Mammalia for the period 1820 to 1970 (Fairley. 1972a), I encountered not a single reference to him. I am indebted to Mr C. D. Deane. Deputy Director of the Ulster Museum, who came across a copy of his book in the Belfast Linen-hall Library, for bringing it to my attention."
