In 1850 Owen arrived in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana where he purchased the physical remains of the St. Mary's Mission which had closed some years back. He then developed the property into a major commercial center of the Northwest. Between 1851 and 1864, to keep his trading post in provisions, Owen made 34 separate trips of 2300 miles each by packtrain.
